It is curious that many languages in their written form seem to attach
less importance to recording the vowel sounds than to recording the
consonant sounds.  In fact, there are cases in which the vowels are often
omitted, while in other cases the vowels are indicated by small marks
attached to, or above, the associated consonants.  I am not enough of a
student of languages to know if there is or was a real justification for
this practice in terms of the importance or rather the lack of importance
of the vowel in word recognition in these languages.

Certainly the vowel is all important for many of our short words, usually
of Anglo-Saxon origin.  Witness, bat, bate, bet, beet, bit, bite, bot,
boat, bout, boot, but, butte, etc., not to mention those words where
unsounded consonant letters are introduced to identify the intended vowel
sound, such, for example, as bought.

This leads one to wonder if greater attention should be given to the
vowels. The pendulum may have swung. Perhaps, for reading ease, we should
make the vowels more distinctive in some way.  There does seem to be a
trend in this direction. Certainly, an i and an o are more different than
are a b and an h.  One way to do this might be to make the vowels as a
class somewhat larger, perhaps have then taller, say as tall as the t.

It might be interesting to do some experiments along these lines using
metafont.  The right way to do this would be to design a complete font or
actually many complete fonts in which changes of the type suggested were
made with due attention to the separation of effects.  This would be a
long range task. As a quick and dirty experiment one could select
the vowels from a larger font than that used for the consonants.
